The Situation

Sudan has been in crisis since becoming independent in 1956. Civil wars and disasters have cost more than three million lives and forced four million people from their homes. They have caused major damage to Sudan's education system and a high proportion of children don't go to school. We're working with the government, school leaders, communities, teachers and students in northern Sudan to give children affected by armed conflict educational opportunities that provide protection, development and learning that fulfils their aspirations.

  • Only 1% of the central government's budget goes on education, compared with 28% for defence
  • Just 7.4% of children under five had pre-school places in 2004.
