Dress-Smart founder John Bougen will front Save the Children New Zealand’s Annual Appeal 14-20 October.
The Auckland businessman, who recently set a world record by visiting the most countries in the world in 167 days, supported Save the Children throughout his quest, using his profile to highlight inequalities for children worldwide.
On route, he visited a small village on the outskirts of Quelimane, Mozambique’s fourth largest city, where Save the Children is breaking new ground by developing HIV/AIDS education resources for children.
“This work is life changing. These children are now armed with the facts and can make educated choices, which may mean the difference between life and death," said Mr Bougen.
He described his visit to Mozambique as “sobering and thought-provoking."
“One in eight of the population of Mozambique is HIV positive. More than 1.2 million children in Mozambique are AIDS orphans – an astonishing 1 in every 6 children.
“Save the Children is empowering the local people to avoid or minimize the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS, but there are major obstacles such as ingrained local sexual taboos, superstition and myths relating to the catch and cure of HIV/AIDS.
“It has taken up to a year of concerted effort to get all members of a village talking openly and honestly about how HIV/AIDS is transmitted and the measures to prevent infection.
“I urge New Zealanders to dig deep for Save the Children’s Annual Appeal. I’ve seen it for myself - your help really does make a difference."
During his world quest, Bougen, an expert photographer, took a photo of a child in every country and asked each child “What is your dream?" Penguin is releasing his book, My Dream: Listen to the Children on 6 October.
Penguin and Whitcoulls have generously joined together to donate $2 to Save the Children’s Annual Appeal for every book sold in October.
