Chief Executive – Heather Hayden

Heather is passionate about making the world a better place, especially in the areas of poverty, inequality, discrimination and injustice.

She has worked with women and children in communities in India, developed national programmes and strategies for action in New Zealand, turned around failing organisations and led advocacy at an international government level.

She has a wide network within the government sector and has experience in building strategic partnerships, introducing business systems and processes, and developing disciplined planning and financial management.



Our programme staff develop and monitor international and national programmes, coordinate our response during emergencies; raise awareness of issues for children; and monitor our obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Fundraising and Finance

Our fundraising and marketing staff look after our donors, oversee our partnerships and share information about the progress we’re making for children across the world. Our finance team oversee our budget and make sure we’re accounting for every dollar we receive from our supporters and funders.


Chair – Susie Staley

Susie was appointed to the Board as Chair in March 2015. A lawyer based in Dunedin, she has a wealth of experience as a Director and has served as a member and chair of several Boards, including Maritime New Zealand and Fashion ID.

National President – Ros Stace

Ros first became involved with Save the Children in the United Kingdom, and has been active with her local Hastings and District branch for many years. Ros was appointed President in 2008, and works across the regions with our volunteers.

Treasurer – Peter Kane

Peter chairs the Audit and Risk Committee. Previously a partner at KPMG and a senior vice-president at BearingPoint, Peter is the CEO of Unimarket. He is also a shareholder and director of the Momentum recruitment group.

Joan Baker

Joan chairs the Leadership and Remuneration Committee. She is a company director and a consultant to business and not-for-profit organisations. She was on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority Board and has been managing director of Scholastic NZ Ltd, marketing development manager of DB Breweries and president of the NZ Institute of Management.

Dennis McKinley

Dennis was appointed to the Board in March 2015. From 2001 to 2014, Dennis was the Executive Director of UNICEF. Now retired, Dennis is currently the Chair of Fundraising institute of NZ (FINZ), the Chair of the Board of Directors of Obie Investments Ltd, and a Board Member of the Blumhardt Foundation.

Dr Suzanne Flanagan

Suzanne was appointed to the Board in November 2015. She has extensive executive experience leading sales and marketing teams including 10 years as General Manager for OfficeMax School Supplies. Suzanne brings to the board a proven ability for developing strategy and implementing effective change. She has extensive communications experience and an inherent passion for helping others.

David May

David has extensive management and board experience. He was Chairman of the New Zealand Superannuation Fund from 2002 to 2012 and has served on the boards of Southern Cross and Sovereign Insurance. He is a past CEO of Colonial NZ, Jacques Martin and ACC. An actuary by training David brings strong commercial and governance experience.
